Sunscreens: What You Need To Know + Our Favorites

Let's talk sunscreen because not all sunscreens are created equal.

Many conventional sunscreens contain chemical ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone, which have been linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, and even coral reef damage. These chemicals are absorbed into the skin and can enter the bloodstream, raising long-term health questions. We recommend choosing mineral-based sunscreen.    Below, we are sharing a couple of our favorites along with their EWG (Environmental Working Group) rating.

🌞 Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30: No white residue!

Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 is a moisturizing sunscreen lotion designed specifically for individuals with darker skin tones (I have olive skin tone that tans easily). Unlike many sunscreens that leave a white residue, this formula blends seamlessly, ensuring no white cast. Infused with nourishing ingredients like jojoba and avocado oils, it not only protects against harmful UVA/UVB rays but also hydrates the skin. It's water-resistant (80 minutes) and fragrance-free formulation makes it suitable for daily use on both the face and body.

✅ EWG Rating: Low Hazard

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 holds a low hazard rating, indicating that it meets EWG's strict standards for ingredient safety and transparency. This rating reflects the product's commitment to avoiding harmful chemicals and ensuring consumer safety. EWG rating for Black Girl Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30 | EWG's Guide to Sunscreens

You can purchase Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 directly from their official website, as well as at major retailers like Target, Ulta, and Amazon.

🦎 Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+: Trusted Protection for Sensitive Skin

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ is a mineral-based sunscreen formulated with 10% zinc oxide and 8% titanium dioxide as active ingredients. It's designed to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection without the use of chemical sunscreen agents, making it ideal for individuals with sensitive skin. The sunscreen is fragrance-freeparaben-free, and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, ensuring lasting protection during outdoor activities.

✅ EWG Rating: Moderate Hazard

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ holds a moderate hazard rating. This rating reflects concerns related to certain ingredients: My OTC Store+17Nellis Auction+17EWG+17

  • Titanium Dioxide (8%): While effective as a UV filter, it's associated with moderate concerns regarding cancer and other health effects when inhaled in powder or spray forms.
  • Zinc Oxide (10%): Generally considered safe, though there are moderate concerns about allergies and immunotoxicity.
  • We do have to specifically search for the blue lizard brand we are buying since some do reflect a moderate rating while others are lower.

  • Opt for EWG VERIFIED® Products: These products meet strict health standards and are free from EWG's chemicals of concern.
  • Choose Fragrance-Free Options: Products labeled as "fragrance-free" are less likely to contain undisclosed chemical mixtures as fragrance is considered a trade secret and they do not need to disclose what is in it.
