My Why for Precision Weight Management: Count Toxins Not Calories

I am modeled after my Dad. He was an air force pilot during World War II and the Korean War. He would get up every morning and exercise. He ate a poached egg and whole wheat toast each morning. He had a salad at noon and a healthy dinner every night.

Yet, unlike all his thin-fit Air Force buddies, he had a belly.

So do I.

I hate it.

I am an active guy. Most people who hear my stories wonder how many lifetimes I have lived. EMT, Paramedic, MD, white water guide, Kayaking instructor, Mountain guide, Mountain climbing, back country skiing, and bike trips all over the US, Canada, and Europe. And run, walk, or bike nearly every day. Yet according to my BMI, I have been obese.

All my Chucklehead buddies I do things with are super athletic. I'm the pudgy one. It's not that I am unfit—I keep up—but I carry more fat along the way.

Why?

Well, it’s not for lack of trying.

As a physician, I hear these same types of stories. And see people really trying. Doing all the things I would tell them, and not lose a pound.

That led me to wonder… What are we missing?

Many of our patients with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, chronic fatigue, or autoimmune disease carry many toxins. As part of their program, we would detox them. We would see, as a side effect, weight loss.

Then I saw a study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) that showed newborn babies have almost 300 identifiable industrial toxins in their umbilical cord blood. This, along with us finding 5 to 20 toxins at moderate to high levels in our own patients, leads me to realize we live in a toxic world. A world filled with endocrine disruptors, Immune disruptors, Obesogens, Carcinogens, metabolic disruptors, and more. We know that these toxins interact in ways we do not even understand, often synergistically, meaning that 2 toxins may be 10 or 100 times more toxic when mixed. And we know that these toxins force our bodies to gain weight.

Then I started thinking about who gets overweight. If you think about blue zones, areas where people live longer, healthier lives, they typically have an obesity rate of 5 to 10%. However, as these societies become more industrialized, the obesity rates increase. In industrialized countries, it is much higher. USA 42%, UK 28%, Australia 31%.

The major difference is toxins—toxins of all types, environmental, metabolic, food additives, and even toxic thoughts, e.g., stress.

In 1980, less than 1% of China’s population was obese. In 2020, 50% of China's adult population was obese. This trend mirrors China's industrialization.

However, there is one blue zone that shows us that everything is not lost!

In Loma Linda, California, there is a large population of Seventh-day Adventists. They have resisted the Western diet and eat a more plant-based diet. They have created an infrastructure of organic food stores to lower the toxic burden. They have a close-knit social structure that resists stress, and they do not suffer from the obesity and chronic illness of the rest of the country.

From this realization, Precision Weight Management (PWM) was born. To solve my own issues and help so many more.

There is one more reason for PWM. People have their motivations. I have noticed that, for example, I might be talking about the ills of smoking; heart disease, lung cancer, and all the other bad stuff. But it's not until I mention facial wrinkles that people sit up and notice.

By addressing weight loss, we can get people's attention and set them on a path to deeper wellness. We can repair their physiology, self-esteem, mindset, and more.
